Conversational Discomfort Aptitude

Conversational Discomfort Aptitude

How do you get divorced without it being awful, awkward, scary and testing? You don’t. Those things go with the territory and like the arduous climb up Scafell Pike a necessary part of getting from A to B.

That’s my answer when a client either directly asks or infers how do they have a difficult team conversation – without it being awful, awkward, scary or testing ?

Best illustrated with my C grade diagram ‘The Discomfort Zone’ and its text…

“To achieve an issue resolution that has integrity and sustainability it is inevitable, indeed necessary, to enter the conversational discomfort zone. It cannot and should not be avoided, as it is an integral part of the process. Any resolution that has side stepped this area lacks integrity, is unlikely to be robust and will collapse at some point.”
