Being Mature in Building Mature Teams

Expectation Management For Winners

I implore you, (the drama of it!) don’t confuse a Team Activity session with a team Development session – as you will get a whole different set of outcomes.

Neither is right or wrong, good or bad – just different.

I see skip loads of industry money being wasted on utilizing the wrong medium in order to bring about performance enhancement or collaboration.

Team Activity days (The gee-gees, go karting, sailing, a few beers etc.) create the conditions and outcomes of fun, some bonding, pressure release and in the scale of team evolution, headway in the forming and maybe storming domains.

My view is they are better for established teams and it’s not meant to produce long-term outcomes other than enjoyment, pure fun, creating memorable moments –  and why not.

Team Development activities need to raise individuals self-awareness and of their place and contribution to the team. Alongside that, linear progress will be made on objectives, purpose, collaboration principles and push them into norming and performing.

Team Development is your workhorse for building high performance teams and there is an expectation that people will produce linear outputs, decisions and commitment to action.

The perfect combo? 80% invested in Team Development, 20% in Team Activity.
